The southwest monsoon has made landfall in Kerala on May 24 in 2023, marking the earliest announcement of its arrival (by 8 days) at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) since 2009. Rain is occurring in parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Mizoram already.
A Boon for Agriculture
According to the IMD, the country is likely to see above-normal rainfall from the monsoon season of 2025. This is good not only for agriculture but also for refilling reservoirs, where water tables can improve while alleviating water shortages in the areas that normally experience droughts.

As rural India rejoices in the rains to come, urban areas now gear up to face the challenges the rains bring. Many of these cities mesmerized by the rains are Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai with big poster of an administrative city – and cope with even mere inches of rain falling in a rental season can feel increasingly like flood. Local authorities in these urban cities called for the public and civic bodies alike to stay alert and activate their early disaster response plans.

Additionally, experts have suggested that while this early monsoon is good news, it may be part of a wider context of climate variability. Erratic climate patterns that result in sudden cloudbursts or extended dry periods could undermine the benefits of the monsoon rainfall in at risk areas.
