Recently, Sumy, a city in northeastern Ukraine, experienced an influx of drone and missile strikes from Russia, which caused fatalities among civilians as well as severe destruction from the strikes. The violence in the region is increasingly evident when considering number of non-combatants.
Escalation of Attacks
On April 14, 2025, a Russian missile attack on Sumy killed at least 35 civilans and injured a further 119. The missile attack was one of the deadliest in months aimed specifically at residential areas and residential infrastructure. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike and told the world to react strongly to Russia’s aggression. On March 6, Russian Shahed drones struck residential buildings injuring seven injured including a 10 year old child, while also damaging a preschool and continue damage to many vehicles. International Reactions and Implications
The international community’s outcry against the increase in assaults on Sumy has been considerable. Psychological impacts on the residents are significant, as they live under constant threat of violence and loss of family and friends. Despite the condemnations of the world, attacks on Sumy continue, demonstrating just how difficult it is to negotiate a ceasefire and effectively utilize diplomacy in this context.
