In a stunning political twist, Mark Carney has led the Liberal Party of Canada back to a fourth consecutive term in the 2025 federal election! The Liberals won 168 of the 338 seats in the election, just four seats short of a majority, but will form a minority government with the backing of other parties.
Carney took leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada one month prior to the election after Justin Trudeau resigned. He had never held public office prior to this campaign. During the campaign, he ran as a fiscal and economic stability and resilience candidate. Voters recognized the advantages of Carney’s leadership over U.S. economic volatility and aggression.

🇺🇸 Strained U.S.-Canada Relations: Carney’s Firm Stance
A key issue in the election was the growing resentment between Canada and the U.S. President Donald Trump’s antagonistic trade policies, abrasive rhetoric – including comments about annexing Canada – energized the nationalistic sentiments of Canadian voters.
In his victory speech, Carney spoke directly to these sentiments, stating, “Trump is trying to break us so America can own us.” He reiterated that the old U.S.-Canada relationship based on various forms of economic integration is dead, and that it was time to embrace a new era of Canadian autonomy and resiliency.
Political Shifts: Conservative Setbacks
Along with the fluctuations of the campaign, came shifts in the political landscape of Canada. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre lost his longstanding seat in Carleton, Ontario, unimaginable defeat for a party that previously led voter intention polls earlier in the year. Poilievre’s brand of campaigning; clear parallels of Trump’s dogmatic nationalist approach was unintentional, which seemed to allow voters to materially disengage , Zara Nanu, a workplace researcher said: “In the case of Poilievre, there was nothing there for voters to even attach to in terms of his intent to actually engage the electorate in the experience of his journey to propose a vision for the Canada.”
The New Democratic Party (NDP) suffered a tremendous fall from glory, gaining embarrassment victory of fewer than 10 seats (24). With their unfortunate poor performance, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has resigned.
