Volkswagen has started testing its new sub-4-meter SUV, to be called the Tera. The new model, derived from the Skoda Kylaq, will be placed on the MQB 27 platform and will be manufactured at Volkswagen’s Pune facility in Chakan. The new spy images show the SUV’s design language, which follows a more linear route than its Skoda cousin.
Design: Simplicity Over Edginess
The Volkswagen Tera will have a simpler and more elegant appearance compared to the Kylaq’s edgy design. The front end has traditional headlights that blend perfectly with the top part of the signature Volkswagen grille. In contrast to the split headlamp design on the Kylaq, the Tera takes a more conventional route.
The front bumper features a contrast black finish, with openings built into the sides, perhaps for fog lamps. The side profile shows a more rounded shape with softer body lines, producing a sleek but compact look. The rear end features a joined tail lamp configuration, running the width of the vehicle, injecting a dash of modernity and sophistication.
Powertrain: A Familiar But Capable Setup
Volkswagen will fit the Tera with the 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, which also drives a number of Volkswagen and Skoda models in India. The engine produces:
- 114 bhp of power
- 178 Nm of maximum torque
The SUV will probably have two transmission options:
- A 6-speed manual gearbox
- A 6-speed torque converter automatic
This powertrain configuration provides a balance of performance and fuel efficiency, and thus is a prime candidate in the sub-4M SUV segment.

Volkswagen will load the Tera with necessary and premium features to match the highly competitive segment. Anticipated features are:
