Former U.S. President Donald Trump, made a surprising announcement on June 24, 2025. A “complete and total ceasefire” was now taking place, between Israel and Iran. Trump, revealed, his diplomatic efforts to render further escalation moot, during a press briefing at the Mar-a-Lago resort, but the facts on the ground point to continuing trouble. While foreign media reports, and even some defense analysts continue to drone on about “fighting” between both sides, other analysts more credible, to these types of undefined issues are pointing to the sustained and sporadic missile strikes and drone exchanges to ask what type of ceasefire could have just been initiated.
International Response and Public Skepticism
Responses to the ceasefire announcement have been mixed. While some of Trump’s supporters hailed it as a diplomatic victory, foreign policy experts and other world leaders were skeptical of any impact. The United Nations and NATO have not yet officially endorsed the agreement, and both Israel and Iran made cautious statements without officially endorsing the ceasefire. The European Union called for both countries to exercise restraint, while calling for an international monitoring mechanism to monitor compliance. In Israel, opposition lawmakers criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu to accept an agreement brokered by Trump, while Iranian state media referred to the ceasefire as a “strategic pause”, rather than a real peace agreement.

What Lies Ahead: Hope or Illusion?
The historic animosity between Israel and Iran makes every ceasefire tenuous at best. While Trump’s announcement has subdued global fears that regional war will erupt any moment, experts contend the basic tenets of hostilities of an ideological and military variety are still so entrenched that they remain unassuaged. U.S. intelligence sources report that high levels of alert still exist in both countries and military resources remain positioned in every applicable direction both militarily and logistically. The next several days will be essential to determining if the ceasefire will hold up or be overcome by mistrust and provocation.
