Renault Filante Prototype Breaks into New EV Efficiency Record

Renault Filante Prototype

Renault has unveiled the Filante Record 2025, an all-electric prototype designed to break a new efficiency record. The streamlined single-seater is a continuation of Renault’s tradition of record-setting prototypes. Inspired by the 40 CV des Records (1925), Nervasport des Records (1934), and Étoile Filante (1956), this new model embodies the latest in aerodynamics and lightweight construction.

The Filante Record 2025 was engineered to weigh under 1,000 kg, despite it carrying an 87 kWh battery pack. In fact, the battery alone weighs around 600 kg, and so Renault minimized weight in other areas. Its design reflects this focus on efficiency, with smooth surfacing and minimal drag.

The car is shaped extremely tall, narrow, and long. Its pseudo-open-wheel layout is very similar to traditional speed record cars. Additionally the exposed suspension arms try to connect the wheels directly to the main body in an inspiration taken directly from Formula 1 designs. Floating fenders guide airflow over and around wheels and further reduce the resistance associated with aerodynamics.

The cockpit is designed with a bubble canopy, inspired by fighter jets. The structure enhances airflow while maintaining the vehicle’s lightweight philosophy. However the company has minimized material use inside the cabin to reduce weight.

The seat uses stretched canvas like hammocks. Carbon-fiber blades, which are covered in technical textile, provide structural support. Thin digital displays minimize extra material, and the steering wheel integrates acceleration and braking controls. This design removes traditional foot pedals and replaces them with steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire technologies.

Renault has done away with traditional foot pedals, using all-electronic control instead. The steering wheel is the direction of movement and acceleration as well as braking. Drive-by-wire allows for maximum precision in control by weighting as low as possible.

Powertrain and Future Testing Plans

Renault has not yet announced full powertrain specifications, but the prototype is equipped with an 87 kWh battery. The company has designed the vehicle for maximum energy efficiency rather than high-speed performance.

Renault will unveil the Filante Record 2025 at the Rétromobile motor show in Paris from February 5 to 9, 2025. After the exhibition, engineers will test it in the wind tunnel. The brand will try to break the efficiency world record in the first half of 2025.

The Filante Record 2025 continues Renault’s tradition of building record-breaking prototypes. The design philosophy follows the principles of past Renault speed record cars. The 40 CV des Records, Nervasport des Records, and Étoile Filante all set records in their respective eras.

With an ultra-lightweight, aerodynamically optimized electric vehicle, Renault is pushing the boundaries of EV efficiency. The upcoming record attempt will show how advanced engineering can maximize range and performance in electric vehicles.
