Audi Drops Odd-Even Naming System for ICE and EV Models

Audi Drops Odd-Even Naming System

Audi Drops Odd-Even Naming System: Audi has abandoned its odd-even naming strategy for internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs). The company introduced the system in 2023, assigning odd numbers to ICE models and even numbers to EVs. However, Audi reversed this decision following dealer and customer feedback.

The automaker confirmed that it will no longer distinguish ICE and EV models by their numbers. Instead, Audi will revert to its traditional naming approach, where “A” denotes a car and “Q” represents an SUV.

Confusion Led to Policy Reversal

Audi initially applied the odd-even rule across its lineup, leading to unexpected name changes. The all-electric Q4 and Q6 SUVs followed this format. The company also introduced the new-generation A4 as the A5, surprising long-time Audi enthusiasts.

The confusion extended to Audi’s SUV lineup. The next-generation Q7, under the new rule, would have been renamed Q8. However, Audi already uses Q8 for its flagship petrol and electric SUVs. The overlap created naming conflicts, prompting Audi to reconsider its approach.

Naming Structure Moving Forward

Audi will now apply a consistent naming format across all future models. EVs will share names with their combustion-engine counterparts, carrying the “e-tron” suffix for differentiation. The company will continue using TFSI (petrol), TDI (diesel), and TFSI e (hybrid) badges for combustion models. Additionally, Audi will retain the Avant, Sedan, and Sportback suffixes to indicate body styles.

Audi confirmed that it will not rename models already on sale. The A5, Q4 e-tron, and Q6 e-tron will retain their current names in markets where they have been introduced. However, the company may reconsider naming conventions for new markets, such as India, where the A4 name has strong recognition.

Next-Generation A6 to Debut on March 4

Audi has announced that the next-generation A6, which was originally planned as the A7, will debut globally on March 4, 2025. The A6 e-tron is expected to launch in India later this year.

Audi Drops Odd-Even Naming System

By returning to its traditional naming structure, Audi aims to simplify model identification and enhance brand consistency. The revised approach ensures clarity for customers while maintaining the prestige associated with Audi’s legacy nameplates.
