India Raises Alarm Over Pakistan’s Nuclear Security

India and Pakistan

In a major diplomatic act, India has raised serious concerns for the safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons after weeks of political and military tensions, culminating in the Pahalgam terror attack and ceasefire agreement reached with Pakistan. India is calling on the international community, including the United Nations and other international watchdogs for nuclear safety, to closely monitor Pakistan’s nuclear infrastructure in the fear that it will abuse its nuclear powers, or least that there are some very risky security lapses with it.

Concerns Over Stability and Terrorism

India’s primary concern centers on Pakistan’s internal instability. Frequent political instability, a shaky economy, and a growing radicalization of groups have generated apprehension over whether Pakistan can reliably secure its nuclear weapons. As Indian officials have said, if extremists could gain or have gained access to nuclear weapons, the consequences would be catastrophic, not just for South Asia but for the world as a whole.

After recent news that Pakistan’s nuclear command also lacks reliable command and control and has insider threats, it should be no surprise that India is concerned. New Delhi has also cited examples of instances where militants have crossed into Pakistan’s military facilities in highly sensitive areas, and these incidents should raise alarm bells. It led India to call for greater vigilance and transparency.

Call for Global Oversight

India is advancing its demand for a more proactive international response in ensuring nuclear safety in the region. India’s officials at the United Nations and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) proposed regular inspections, safety audits and intelligence sharing to facilitate a moderation of risk. The goal is to not only protect the subcontinent, but to promote the global responsibility of nuclear safety.
Pakistan dismissed India’s concerns calling them politically motivated. However, global experts acknowledge that the situation needs to be looked at. In fact, many have argued that the specific challenges posed by nuclear weapons- especially in contested regions- requires the utmost sustained scrutiny. India’s position is receiving quiet support from several international actors who are concerned about the implications of a nuclear-armed state grappling with serious internal issues.
