On May 17, 2025, at 08:45 AM, Myanmar was struck by an earthquake measuring 5.24 that was felt throughout multiple areas of Myanmar and several other areas, which implemented regional monitoring measures.
Epicenter & Impact Zone
The earthquake’s epicenter was found to be shallow beneath central Myanmar, a location that is already susceptible because of tectonic plate activity. It was light in magnitude, however, people in towns closest to the epicenter experienced tremor shaking sufficiently strong enough to cause minor wall cracking and, along with the tremor, temporary power outages; likewise, response teams mobilized to begin assessment of infrastructure and damage from checking bridges, roads, and buildings. Fortunately, no major structures have been reported as having immediate collapse.
Nearby countries, including portions of Thailand and Bangladesh, remained aware of the tremor; however, no considerable impact to those country’s territories was found. A limit to damage from the earthquake was observed due to shallow depth and the shock-wave was more perceptible on the earth’s surface.

Ongoing Preparedness Efforts
Following the latest tremor, Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology encouraged residents to remain vigilant and to review basic earthquake safety measures. Schools in affected townships were closed temporarily for inspections, and local governments started drills to support and reinforce evacuation plans.
Seismologists are still investigating to determine if this earthquake, which had a 5.24 magnitude, was an aftershock related to the March 28 earthquake or an entirely new earthquake. Regardless of the determination, it illustrates the need for informed urban planning and awareness of construction types in earthquake-prone areas.
