Generation Z is typically on the wrong end of unmerited and unfair criticism. Generally, Gen Z is called “lazily,” “too sensitive,” spend “too much time online,” and more. However, there is much more to it than that. Specifically, they are creating a world that is bold and progressive.
Much of the criticism directed at Gen Z can be attributed to the fact that they question the status quo. Other generations have accepted, to a degree, traditional work styles, schooling, and social roles. however, they are willing to challenge and reject old ideas. Gen Z is less focused on rigid schedules and corporate hierarchy, and more focused on their mental well-being, inclusivity, and purpose/value in their work. There are many professionals who are opting for freelance, startup, or remote careers, which allow them the flexibility and the sense of purpose they value in life, in the workforce, and in community responsibilities. Older generations may view these decisions as “lazy”, while in reality they are a much more balanced view of life and success.
Tech-Savvy and Globally Aware
Gen Z has had smart devices, social media, and access to information at their fingertips. This has given them an immense advantage as they are fluent with technology. They can quickly learn new things, navigate systems, access knowledge, and stay informed about worldwide issues that interest them. Gen Z can tap into other people’s communities, trends, political nuances, climate change, activism, etc. Most adults complain about Gen Z’s screen time and “social media addiction,” but the public doesn’t realize that Gen Z uses their devices, not just for play, but using them as a vehicle to learn, engage, connect, and raise awareness for causes they believe in. Emotionally Intelligent and Inclusive
Gen Z is arguably the most emotionally intelligent generation we’ve known. They openly talk about mental health, identity, and equality. They call out racism, sexism, and injustice, and want to build a more inclusive and caring world. They’re understandably seen as “too sensitive” or “too easily offended”, but sensitivity is actually emotional maturity that we could really use in the world now.
