On Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test against Australia, it was Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy who showed grit and resilience at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). They added 127 runs, which revived India’s innings and reduced the first-innings deficit significantly. That was a turning point in the series.
India’s Tough Start to the Day
India resumed on 164/5, but it was not to get much better as Pant and then Jadeja fell over within an hour of starting play. With the follow-on in danger, the burden kept building on the young pairing of Sundar and Reddy. They batted wonderfully and made sure India went into the day without suffering the follow-on and remained on 358/9 at stumps, behind by 116 runs.
The Mindset in the Middle
Washington Sundar opened up on the dressing room talks that ignited their partnership. Captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir stressed that one has to fight no matter what. “Rohit bhai and Gauti bhai keep telling us to fight no matter what. Playing for India, especially at a venue like the MCG, motivates us to give our all,” said Sundar. This approach helped the pair stabilize India’s innings under trying circumstances.

Washington Sundar’s Steady Contribution .
Sundar played a defensive game, which was much needed as Nitish Kumar Reddy played out the innings. The left-hander’s innings were mature as he faced 162 balls and scored a gritty 50 with only one boundary. Though spinner Nathan Lyon got him out, Sundar’s effort was enough to stabilize India’s recovery.
Nitish Kumar Reddy played an outstanding innings, smashing his first Test century in just his fourth match. The 21-year-old displayed great composure and skill as he finished the day unbeaten on 105. Calculated risks and elegant strokes proved that he has the mettle to perform on the big stage.
Appreciation for the Youngster
Washington Sundar termed Reddy’s innings as “unbelievable”. He was elated that he got to see the youngster score a century and which, according to him, would be remembered for long time. Reddy, who had made his debut on opening day of the series, has been India’s highest scorer in the series with 284 runs so far.
A Memorable Partnership
The partnership between Sundar and Reddy highlighted the team’s teamwork and determination. This also showed bench strength from India, where youngsters took the initiative in key moments of the game.
Looking Ahead
When play resumes, Reddy will look to build his innings further and reduce the lead by Australia. Form and confidence will be very important in the fightback for India in the Test.
With such promising performances, the future of Indian cricket seems bright. The resilience shown by Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar at the MCG is testimony to their potential and the strength of the next generation of players.
