Volvo ES90: A Game-Changer in the Electric Sedan Market

Volvo ES90

Volvo has launched the ES90, its first-ever all-electric sedan, globally. The ES90 is the latest addition to Volvo’s expanding electric family, preceded by the likes of the EX90, EX30, and EC40. The ES90 is developed on the sophisticated SPA2 platform, which demonstrates Volvo’s vision for sustainable mobility. It will initially be launched in select European markets, with others soon to follow.

Impressive Exterior Design

Volvo has engineered the ES90 with an elegant and contemporary look. The front end boasts Volvo’s ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED daytime running lights, adding to its aggressive stance. The headlamp clusters are similar to those of the EX30, bestowing on the sedan a familiar yet contemporary look. Under the headlights, vertical fog lamps bracket a broad rectangular air intake, adding to the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

From the side, the ES90 presents a crisp shoulder line and chiseled wheel arches. The doors’ lower half has creases, which further enhance the sporty design. As a liftback, the ES90 has a short overhang at the rear, merging into the sleek roofline. At the back, C-shaped LED taillights are indicative of Volvo’s styling signature. The ES90 has a large 424-liter boot, and an extra 22-liter frunk.

Luxurious and High-Tech Interior

The ES90 interior continues Volvo’s tradition of pairing minimalism with high-quality materials. The cabin revolves around a 14.5-inch portrait-mode infotainment touchscreen, featuring Google’s integrated software package. The system provides easy access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and various applications from Google Play.

Volvo completes the in-car experience with ambient lighting, six different themes included. The glass roof is a panoramic affair that bathes the cabin in light, and consumers can also get an electrochromic glass roof, which allows for adjustable transparency. Volvo provides an optional 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system for added audio immersion.

Powertrain Options and Performance

Volvo offers the ES90 with three different powertrain options. The entry-level version comes with a single motor setup, producing 338 bhp and 480 Nm of torque. The twin-motor version boosts power to 455 bhp and 670 Nm, and the performance-oriented twin-motor version produces a whopping 690 bhp and 870 Nm of torque.

Though they differ in terms of power, the three variants are otherwise identical when it comes to their top speed of 180 kmph. Their acceleration times, however, are quite different from one another. The single-motor model hits 0-100 kmph in 6.9 seconds. The twin-motor model manages a better time of 5 seconds. The performance version does it in 4 seconds.

Impressive Battery Range and Fast Charging

The ES90 is available with two battery pack designs. The lowest single-motor model comes equipped with a 92 kWh pack, offering as much as a 650 km driving range against WLTP expectations. The double-motor iterations have a slightly bigger 106 kWh battery unit, taking the driving range all the way up to 700 km.

Volvo incorporates sophisticated charging technology in the ES90, which is the quickest-charging EV ever produced by the company. With an 800V electrical architecture, the sedan can handle DC fast charging up to 350 kW. This feature allows a quick 10-80% charge in only 20 minutes—30 minutes quicker than Volvo’s earlier electric vehicles.

Volvo’s Vision for the Future

The ES90 is a significant development in Volvo’s electrification roadmap. Combining the latest technology, upscale design, and impressive performance, this sedan is a force to be reckoned with in the international EV market. Volvo continues to break new ground, laying new standards for green luxury in the world of automobiles.
