Volkswagen has finally confirmed the India launch of two much-awaited models – the Golf GTI and the new-gen Tiguan R-Line. The cars will come as completely built-up (CBU) imports and hence will be premium segment offerings for the company. The India launch will take place in the second quarter of 2025, and deliveries will start by May.
Volkswagen India’s Brand Director, Ashish Gupta, highlighted the fact that the models are developed to increase aspirational value of the brand while not being in the sales-driven category. This step by Volkswagen is intended to consolidate its role in India’s premium car segment.
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line: Sports-Oriented SUV with Future-Ready Features
The Tiguan R-Line is based on the new MQB ‘evo’ platform, sharing much the same dimensions as before. It is 30 mm longer and 4 mm taller with the same width and 2,680 mm wheelbase. These minimal changes provide a well-balanced stance while adding more interior room.
Up front, Tiguan R-Line is equipped with Volkswagen’s IQ Light HD Matrix headlights. Those sophisticated units, initially designed for the larger Touareg SUV, employ 38,400 multi-pixel LEDs to enhance visibility. The new design also enhances aerodynamics, lowering the drag coefficient to 0.28 Cd from 0.33 Cd.

On the inside, the Tiguan has a redesigned Digital Cockpit layout. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is complemented by a 15.1-inch standalone touchscreen infotainment system operating Volkswagen’s newest MIB4 software. Inside, there’s also premium material and driver-focused configuration, further enhancing the R-Line’s sporty character.
Volkswagen provides Dynamic Chassis Control Pro as an upgrade on the new Tiguan. The system combines twin-valve variable dampers with a Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM) that adjusts electronic differential locks and lateral damper dynamics. The VDM also has the capability to provide wheel-specific braking and alter damper stiffness for enhanced agility. Nevertheless, Volkswagen hasn’t officially declared whether this feature will be introduced on the India-spec Tiguan R-Line.
Pricing of the Tiguan R-Line will reportedly be much greater than the run-of-the-mill model which is already sold in India.
Volkswagen Golf GTI: The Mythical Hot Hatch Lands in India
Volkswagen will bring the Golf GTI to India for the first time. The newest Mk 8.5 version of this hot hatchback offers fantastic performance with its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder ‘EA888 LK3 evo4’ turbo-petrol engine. It makes 261 bhp and 370 Nm of torque, which propels the vehicle from 0 to 100 kmph in only 5.9 seconds. The car’s top speed is electronically capped at 250 kmph.
The Golf GTI will have a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch auto gearbox, with quick gear changes and good control. The chassis has been specially tuned for driving dynamics by Volkswagen, which makes it one of the most dynamic hatchbacks out there.

While performance lovers will welcome the Golf GTI to India, the cost may be a worry. The car is likely to be priced in excess of ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom), which would make it among the priciest hatchbacks in the country.
Volkswagen’s Strategy for India: Building a Premium Brand Image
Volkswagen India’s move to import the Golf GTI and Tiguan R-Line as full imports indicates a premium focus. In contrast to volume models, these vehicles will appeal to niche customers who value performance and exclusivity.
The company plans to become a performance brand in India. Even though sales volumes for such models may be low, they will act as halo products, pulling enthusiasts and prospective buyers toward the Volkswagen brand.
Conclusion: Exciting Additions to Volkswagen’s Lineup
With Golf GTI and Tiguan R-Line, Volkswagen is looking to grow its premium portfolio in India. Golf GTI will target driving enthusiasts for a performance hatchback, whereas Tiguan R-Line will target buyers for a feature-rich and sporty SUV. While pricing might put these cars in a niche segment, their arrival reflects a significant move for Volkswagen in India’s transforming auto market.
