Virat Kohli Role in RCB : Rajat Patidar has been appointed as the skipper of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) officially. By putting months of rumors to rest regarding whether Virat Kohli would regain leadership. With the franchise parting ways with Faf du Plessis. It was thought that Kohli would get the nod of approval, but RCB rather went for the choice of Rajat Patidar.
Did Kohli Refuse Captaincy?
Following the announcement, RCB’s team director Mo Bobat confirmed that Kohli was considered for the role. However, head coach Andy Flower clarified that Kohli showed “maturity and integrity” in discussions about the captaincy. Speaking at an event in Bengaluru, Flower praised Kohli’s leadership qualities and his support for Patidar.
“In our discussions with Virat, his integrity and maturity stood out. He is excited about this IPL season and has great respect for Rajat, both as a person and a player. Their relationship will be crucial for the team,” Flower said. He also highlighted Kohli’s impact in the previous season, where his contributions helped turn RCB’s fortunes around.
Patidar’s Leadership Credentials
Patidar, who will be RCB’s ninth IPL captain, has leadership experience in domestic cricket. He captained Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy during the 2024/25 season. The second-highest run-getter in the T20 tournament with 428 runs at a strike rate of 186.08.
Patidar shared that he spoke to Bobat last year, and he said he wanted to captain a state side before captaining RCB. “When they said it could be between Virat and me, I was elated. I cannot describe my reaction,” he said.
Patidar described his leadership style as calm and situationally aware, focusing on backing his players and fostering confidence within the team. He acknowledged the presence of experienced leaders in the squad, which would help him grow in his new role.
Kohli’s Influence Remains Strong
Even though Kohli will not be captaining RCB, his backing of Patidar indicates a seamless handover of leadership. While Kohli brings experience, Patidar brings new ideas, and RCB hopes to craft a robust campaign for the 2025 IPL season.
