January 18, 2026. A tragic accident at Sydney Harbour turned into a harrowing tragedy when a 12-year-old boy named Nico Antic suffered a fatal shark bite while swimming off the rocks with his friends at Vaucluse, an eastern suburb of Sydney.
The young man had a cheerful disposition and was very athletic, as well as being generous and kind; therefore, Nico was a beloved friend of many. After the incident, his friends lifted him from the ocean and took him directly to the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, where despite being cared for by medical personnel and rescuers, he died of his injuries on January 24, just six days later.
Nico’s family has said in a written statement that their hearts ache for Nico; they thank the doctors and the surrounding community for their assistance and support during this difficult time, while also requesting that the community respect their privacy during this time of pain. What Happened at Sydney Harbour?
Near Shark Beach, the site of this attack was located along the Hermitage Foreshore Walk. Due to the previous few days of heavy rain, the water in the harbour has turned murky which is said to have potentially attracted sharks into the area closer to shore.
It is believed that the shark in question was either a Bull Shark, which is a species that regularly frequents the estuaries of Australia or a species that regularly frequents Harbours within Australia. The victim, Nico, was bitten on both legs which resulted in severe injuries, for which the Medic was unable to control.
Despite the grave circumstances the young mates of Nico were able to muster great courage and bring him to safety whilst providing him with the best chance possible of being saved before the Emergency Services took over. The actions of these young people, as well as the actions of Police, the Water Rescue team, and Paramedics, have received immense praise for their courage and fast response to this life-threatening situation.
In addition to these rescue efforts, Authorities have closed a number of Beaches in Sydney and have placed additional Surveillance in the affected area, implementing immediate preventative measures.

Nico’s passing is among a series of shark incidents reported along the coast of New South Wales (NSW) during a short period of time.
