Tata Motors has launched trials for India’s first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. The company aims to test the feasibility of hydrogen fuel technology for long-haul freight transport. A total of 16 trucks will operate on key routes, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.

Hydrogen Truck Trials to be Under a 24-Month Test

The testing period will extend up to 24 months. Tata Motors will collect data regarding vehicle efficiency, fuel performance, and operational viability. These trucks will be thoroughly tested under real-world conditions to determine their practicality. The trial will also assist in the analysis of hydrogen infrastructure needs across India.

Two Innovative Hydrogen Technologies to be Tested

Tata Motors is experimenting with two advanced hydrogen propulsion technologies:

  • Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE): Burns hydrogen as fuel in a standard internal combustion engine.
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV): Converts hydrogen fuel cells into electricity to power an electric motor.

The test vehicles are the Tata Prima dH.55S powered by fuel cell technology and the Tata Prima H.28 powered by H2-ICE. Both have an operating range of 300-500 km, which makes them good options compared to diesel trucks.

Government Support for Green Mobility

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the trial, underlining hydrogen’s potential to revolutionize India’s transport sector. He underlined how hydrogen fuel-based vehicles can lower emissions and increase energy independence. The Indian government promotes sustainable mobility actively, urging the use of green technology in commercial transport.

  • Storage & Safety Concerns: Hydrogen is very flammable and needs sophisticated storage and safety arrangements.
