The historical day of July 22, 1947, serves as an important milestone in India’s history when the Constituent Assembly adopted the tricolor as the National Flag of India only weeks before India was to attain independence from British rule. The flag consists of three stripes of saffron, white and green, with the Ashoka Chakra at the center. The flag was more than a symbol. It embodied a vision of unity, struggle and an independent spirit of a new nation.
2. Symbolism and Significance
Each color and symbol used on the flag of India has deep meaning. The saffron color, at the top of the flag, represents courage and sacrifice in honor of freedom fighters and the sacrifices they made for freedom. The white color in the middle represents peace and truth, both of which are essential in the cultural and spiritual fabric of Indian life. The green color, at the bottom of the flag, is associated with growth, prosperity, and faith.
The blue Ashoka Chakra located at the center of the flag has 24 spokes and represents the eternal wheel of dharma (righteousness) and law. By including this symbol, it reminds citizens of the importance of justice and movement forward, which is to say that India, as an Indian culture and society, is on the path to progress.

3. A Day to Reflect and Respect
National Flag Day is an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of India’s freedom fighters and to consider the values of the flag. Schools, government departments, and government offices will have flag hoisting, awareness programs, and cultural activities, among other activities, to mark the day.
It also serves as a reminder to youth about the values in the Indian Constitution – democracy, unity and secularism. This is not a public holiday but reflects for citizens a great sense of patriotism that calls on them to respect the flag in every aspect of their lives.
