Mercedes-Benz has just launched the G 580 Electric SUV in India at ₹3 crore (ex-showroom). This is the first all-electric version of the iconic G-Class, marrying classic design with modern technology. It opened for bookings last year, and the car has already sold out until the third quarter of 2025.
Exterior Design: Classic and Contemporary Merging
The G 580 Electric SUV retains its classic G-Class silhouette while incorporating modern aerodynamic improvements. Designers replaced the traditional grille with a closed-off design, enhancing airflow. The bumper features subtle tweaks, and the cladding along the A-pillars reduces drag. Unique alloy wheels further distinguish this model from its predecessors.
The addition of a fixed roof-mounted rear spoiler and vertical air curtains near the wheel-arches works to enhance overall aerodynamics while the tail gate-mounted spare tire is retained however, customers who want a load box instead.
The G580 is available only in the high-end AMG Line specification so it’s almost sporty styling with 20-inch alloy-wheels.
Interior: Comfort and Technology
Inside the G 580 Electric SUV, Mercedes has preserved the traditional G-Class design but upgraded with EQ-specific software. The digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen come on the widescreen display that serves with seamless functionality.

The traditional center console now features switches for the advanced features of the ‘tank turn’ maneuver and low-range activation. Premium conveniences include heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats; three-zone climate control; and temperature-controlled cup holders. 64-color ambient lighting and panoramic sunroof complement the luxurious ambiance.

Mercedes-Benz equipped the G 580 Electric SUV with advanced safety technologies. Active steering assist and blind spot warning systems ensure safe navigation on busy roads. Under the hood, the G 580 has a quad-motor all-wheel drive electric drivetrain. It can produce 579 bhp and 1,164 Nm of torque. The powertrain is sourced from an under-floor 116 kWh battery pack. The car promises a driving range of up to 473 kilometers on a single charge.

The G 580 starts from 0 to 100 km/h within 4.7 seconds, really delivering the full performance. Still, being relatively slower than AMG G 63, a top speed for G 580 is maintained to be 180 km/h, covering both speed heroes and ecoheroes.
Off-Road Prowess: Staying True to G-Class Legacy
Mercedes designed the G 580 Electric SUV to carry on the off-road heritage of the G-Class. The SUV has approach and departure angles of 32 degrees and 30.7 degrees, respectively. It can conquer sideward slopes of up to 35 degrees and offers a break-over angle of 20.3 degrees. With a fording depth of 850 mm, the G 580 fearlessly deals with water crossings and rugged terrains.
Modern Driver Features
