Iconic Jewels Earl Jones, who has more than lent his voice to well-known characters like Darth Vader and Mufasa, recently passed on at the age of 93. If one talks or thinks about James Earl Jones, his voice has to come to mind.

A Prolific Career
Limited information exists about Jones’ birth; biographies mostly list his chosen birth year as 1931. His father, Robert Earl Jones, left the family before James’ birth to pursue an acting career, collaborating with Langston Hughes and later appearing in films like The Sting.
At the age of five, Jones, and his family from Mississippi resettled to Michigan, after which he struggled with stammering as a child. He was so terrified of people, that he did not speak much until he was in high school, when a poetry teacher encouraged him to read his poems and helped his problem. Jones recalled, âHe started pushing my limits, encouraging me to open my mouth againâŠto recognize and savour the love of words.â
Jones pursued acting at the University of Michigan, worked as an Army Ranger, and afterwards headed towards New York, where he quickly found himself in leading roles in stage productions. That same year he also made his film debut in âDr. Strangeloveâ as a bomb aimer.
I Jones’ breakthrough came in 1967 with his role as Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope, leading to a Tony award and an Oscar nomination, following Sidney Poitier.
By the middle of the 1970s Jones was appearing regularly in films and on TV and this has been a very busy period that lasted. For the next fifty years, he played many fantastic characters: Carl Weathers portrayed diverse roles, from Thulsa Doom to an African king, and even appeared as Admiral Greer in Tom Clancy adaptations.
