The third day of the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston was a remarkable example of the brutal beauty of Test cricket. India started the day in a strong position, after scoring 567 in their first innings, which was helped by a fantastic 269 from captain Shubman Gill.

Having reached 77/3, England continued its innings but were rocked by an early blitz from India’s Mohammed Siraj. Siraj accounted for both Joe Root (caught behind for 22) and England captain Ben Stokes for a golden duck, leaving the hosts at 84/5.

Afternoon: Bazball Batting at Its Best

Just as it appeared that a lifting break-through was near, the visitors delivered an emphatic counter-punch. Harry Brook and Jamie Smith suddenly accelerated the scoreboard with a shower of runs highlighted by a staggering sixth-wicket partnership. At lunch, England was 249/5, rebuilt on a slew of aggressive shots.

Evening: India Regains Grip

The bowlers for India found their rhythm after the break. Akash Deep made a fantastic new-ball breakthrough by dismissing Brook for 158 and break the partnership.

India’s second innings began positively. At stumps India were 64/1, leading by 244 runs. Rahul was not out putting India firmly in the box seat.

Outlook Ahead

Day 4 suggests pressure. India will probably want to move rapidly beyond the competition and build a match winning total while England want to put the ball back in the court of india/ put in the follow on mood, if there is such a thing.
