India Clinches SAFF U-19 Title in Thrilling Penalty Shootout

In the final match of the 2025 SAFF U-19 Championship on May 18, India played to a thrilling 1-1 draw with Bangladesh, and was crowned SAFF U-19 champion for the fourth time. The mood in the stadium was tremendous, and when the match ended in a 1-1 draw, both teams had to go to a penalty shootout to determine a champion. India remained calm under pressure and won the penalties 4-3, which was another memorable chapter in Indian youth football history

A Fierce Rivalry Renewed

The India-Bangladesh football rivalry has been strong for many, many years at the youth levels and the final lived up to its hype. Both teams played tenaciously, accurately and passionately which made for a thrilling game of soccer. Early in the first half, Bangladesh took the lead and kept the pressure on the Indian team, playing high and with confidence. However, India stayed calm and put together a nice goal to even the score just before the half time interval.

The second half was non-stop action, with both teams being able to create some opportunities, but defenders and keepers alike were making great plays to keep the game tied at 1 – 1 until the final whistle.

Penalty Drama Seals the Fate

The game came down to a penalty shootout, which tested both teams’ nerves. Indian goalkeeper Anuj Rawat stole the show with two important saves and India scored four of five attempts; the winning penalty was converted by captain Rudra Pratap.
