A third-year BTech student was found dead in his hostel at IIT Guwahati on Monday, leading to protests by the students. This was the second such incident on the university’s premises within a month.
A student, aged 21 and taking computer science courses at RIMT School of Engineering in a western state via UP, was found dead in his room on Monday. The police received a call reporting the deceased student.
The autopsy is done; now analyzing the deceased’s tactics.
Responding to the barbaric turn of events, the IIT Guwahati administration came out on the 14th of October, stating, “This is about a tragic event involving a loss of life.”
Students, both men and women, demonstrated in large numbers outside the administrative building, claiming that the academic burden had forced their colleague into suicide.
Students are quite agitated because
“I think students are quite agitated because this is the second case of suicide in one month. We want the deans and the directors to meet us and address our concerns,” said one of the student protesters.
A student, previously ineligible for internships, faced distress in a winter course due to attendance issues.
The administration refused to take responsibility for the recent student suicides and addressed our dissatisfaction when we protested. When the last suicide occurred, they refused to accept blame, and we only learned of it from outside sources.

On August 9, exactly one month ago, the institution’s MTech student, aged 23 years and from the state of Uttar Pradesh, was buried in the hostel room.
We testified that we saw a friend hanging from a fan through the ventilator. We tried to break down the door, but the guards prevented us from doing so. It took them at least half an hour to open the door. They showed no concern for whether my friend was dead or not. They also refused to let the nurse assess the condition of the deceased person.

They were not allowed to notify the relatives of the deceased student, with the administration trying to erase the students’ mobile phone videos, asserts the article.

IIT Guwahati is working on finding replies to allegations concerning inadequate mental health and welfare mechanisms, as many students have raised concerns and questioned these provisions.
