Government cancels annual Teachers Day
The West Bengal government has cancelled the Teacher’s Day program in Kolkata this year amid the ongoing protests in the city over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar hospital, The Indian Express reported citing sources.
Each year, the state government organizes the Teacher’s Day program at Netaji Indoor Stadium. The Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, attends the event and delivers a speech to the students. The Education Minister, Bratya Basu, along with other ministers, officials, and dignitaries, also attend the event.
The programme will now be held later
Some teachers are also given the Shiksha Ratna’ awards in addition to this, for their exceptional performances at the event.
According to a senior state official, the planned September 5 Advance Security Liaison (ASL) meeting was suddenly cancelled.

A small Teacher’s Day program will be held at Bikash Bhawan on Thursday, according to the official. The General secretary of ABTA mentioned that the state government and Chief Minister are now “afraid” of the people.
