We have extensively tested Bajaj Auto’s flagship offering, the Pulsar NS400Z, in real-world conditions. Here’s what we found after a thorough evaluation.

Pricing & Positioning
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z comes with an attractive sticker price of ₹1.85 lakh (ex-showroom). As the latest addition to the Pulsar lineup, it holds the title of the biggest and most powerful Pulsar yet. At this price point, it stands out as the most affordable motorcycle in the 400cc class, prompting potential buyers to wonder if they might be compromising on key aspects typically expected from a performance-oriented motorcycle.
Design & Features
At first glance, the Pulsar NS400Z may remind you of the NS200 due to its similar street-naked stance. However, Bajaj has incorporated several design tweaks, such as a new bikini fairing with Z-shaped LED DRLs, more pronounced tank extensions, and fresh colorways with sporty graphics. Although the design isn’t dramatically different, it does give the NS400Z a more muscular appearance.
The motorcycle features a twin-spar perimeter frame borrowed from the Dominar, along with lighter wheels from the N250, showcasing Bajaj’s cost-effective approach in utilizing existing components. The NS400Z boasts all-LED lighting, including a powerful LED projector headlamp, along with a full-digital display that is Bluetooth-enabled. This LCD unit provides access to trip meters, fuel consumption, a lap timer, and turn-by-turn navigation.
Engine & Performance
The Pulsar NS400Z is powered by a 373cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, the same as that found in the Dominar 400, producing 39.4 bhp and 35 Nm of torque. However, the NS400Z features a larger 46-tooth sprocket for improved initial acceleration. A 6-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch manages gear shifts effectively.
Weighing 18 kilograms less than the Dominar 400, the NS400Z achieves impressive performance figures, with a kerb weight of 174 kilograms. It can sprint from 0-60 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, showcasing its capability in the performance arena.
Ride, Handling & Brakes
Riding the NS400Z is exhilarating, particularly in Sport mode, where it exhibits the hooligan spirit reminiscent of the older Duke models. The clutch operation is light, and gear shifts are smooth. While some vibrations are present at lower and higher RPMs, they are manageable, as most riding occurs in the mid-range.
With a wheelbase of 1,344 mm, the bike feels a bit twitchy in corners but remains engaging. The braking system features a 320 mm front disc and a 230 mm rear disc, which perform well, although the tyres could be upgraded for better grip and performance. Efficiency
During our fuel efficiency tests in varying traffic conditions, the Pulsar NS400Z returned a commendable 30 km/l in the city, making it a decent performer for a motorcycle in this segment.
Pricing & Competition
At ₹1.85 lakh ex-showroom, the NS400Z offers exceptional value for money, undercutting competitors like the Triumph Speed 400, KTM 390 Duke, and TVS Apache RTR 310. This pricing strategy positions the NS400Z as a compelling choice for buyers seeking performance without breaking the bank.
Verdict
In conclusion, while the Pulsar NS400Z could benefit from a more distinctive design, its powerful engine and impressive features make it a strong contender in the market. However, the current tyres limit its handling and braking performance. Overall, for the price, the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z represents a fantastic value proposition. A set of high-quality tyres would enhance the riding experience even further, making it a motorcycle worth considering for any performance enthusiast.
