Audi launched the A5L, a long-wheelbase variant of the A5 sedan, at the Guangzhou Auto Show 2024. The A5L is the new substitution for the discontinued A4L. This extends and makes Audi’s popular sedan much more luxurious, specifically designed for the Chinese market.
Increased Dimensions and Powerful Styling
The A5L extends the base A5 by 73 mm in length and 68 mm in its wheelbase, to be around 4,902 mm in length with a 2,965 mm wheelbase. All this is achieved without sacrificing the erstwhile sporty looks of the standard car.
It’s pretty much identical to the global A5 but with tasteful nuances. The A5L has more rear doors and an elongated, flatter bootlid than its sibling, improving on its three-box profile of a sedan. The front and rear are decked with illuminated Audi four-ring logos for that touch of sophistication.
Premium Platform Combustion Architecture
The A5L uses the new architecture of Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion, designed specifically for the standard A5. Details about the A5L’s powertrain options were not provided, although it is assumed that the petrol engine range of the A5L will be derived from the global model.

Unique Interior Features in the Chinese Edition
Audi hasn’t completely unveiled the A5L’s interior, but the brand promises market-specific tweaks for Chinese buyers. Similar to the global A5, the cabin will probably come with a wide-screen displays combining the 11.9-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit and a 14.4-inch central touchscreen. There will also be a dedicated co-driver display for greater functionality and passenger convenience.
Fierce Competition in Luxury Sedan Segment
Design changes and increased length of the A5L are targeted towards buyers demanding even greater comfort and premium features. It, however, positions Audi to compete with models like the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine in long-wheelbase sedans’ markets, as these still attract considerable attention in many markets.
Market Implication and Global Availability
The A5L is a China-only product, and the launch signals that the company has a focus on servicing local tastes. The A5 series could be made available in India by 2025. But whether this long wheelbase A5L will be included or not is not clear.
