AAP’s CM Arvind Kejriwal resigned after meeting Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. He had announced his resignation two days earlier, following his release from Tihar Jail. Arrested by the ED and CBI, the Supreme Court granted him bail in one case, but he remained in custody for the CBI matter.
The AAP announced Atishi, MLA of Kalkaji, would be chief minister instead of Arvind Kejriwal
The term of the present Delhi Assembly expires on February 11, 2025. The last assembly election in Delhi was held on February 8, 2020. AAP had taken 62 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party had garnered 8 seats in the 70-member assembly. In 2015, they won 67 and three seats, respectively.
More importantly, his plans have most often been thwarted at the level of implementation. Initiatives by his government toward public health and education were always marred by bureaucratic bottlenecks. Such issues, among others raised with the central government, made the whole atmosphere unfavorable for Kejriwal to operate. His frustration over such constraints compelled him to resign from the position of CM Arvind Kejriwal resign.
History of Tussle with the Center
Kejriwal’s years as Chief Minister saw tussles with the centre on quite frequent occasions. Indeed, from his very first days of governance, CM Arvind Kejriwal had demanded greater autonomy for the Delhi government. He emphasized Delhi’s statehood while the center believed in its oversight due to being the national capital. This has led to a never-ending battle between Kejriwal’s government and the center.
That is also not the first case of a trouble-brewer. Probably, the most troublesome relation was of the central bureaucrats. Often the Government of CM Arvind Kejriwal was kept at loggerheads with the Lieutenant Governor (LG), who is the representative of the central government in Delhi. The LG enjoys a lot of administrative power in the city, and this has multiple times led to logjam over vital decisions. Kejriwal had crossed his limits in dealing with this situation, which led him to quit.
Impact on Delhi’s Governance and Politics
CM Arvind Kejriwal resign creates a kind of vacuum in leadership at Delhi. Some questions mark the near future of governance in the city. Kejriwal has been able to usher many reforms at large, particularly in the fields of education, healthcare, and public service. However, no one now knows if his eventual successor would continue along those lines. Kejriwal’s exit may impact Delhi’s political scene as opposition parties could see it as a chance for gaining political advantage.
Secondly, CM Arvind Kejriwal resignation might be interpreted as an opportunity for political allies who were awaiting an opportunity to be in the government. AAP has had the majority in the governance of Delhi for many terms. In choosing the leader that will continue the vision and the enormous tasks ahead in governing Delhi, AAP must tread carefully. The opposition parties are going to seize the opportunity and entrench their position in Delhi to fill the leadership vacuum that Kejriwal’s resignation has caused.
Legacy: Kejriwal’s Achievements and Challenges
Arvind Kejriwal may have quit, but the legacy he leaves behind is quite significant. While in office, his government announced several policies that directly attempted to improve the lives of ordinary citizens in Delhi. Among those was public education, revamped to give good governance and superior education to poor children at government schools. Kejriwal also succeeded in starting “Mohalla Clinics, making health services available and affordable to citizens throughout Delhi.
This involves not just the aforementioned reforms, but Kejriwal also made his leadership stand out by working on issues of corruption reduction. The anti-corruption platform he built into his political career connected to several voters in the city of Delhi. CM Anjali Kejriwal consistently and vocally advocated for transparent governance and worked towards the accountability of his administration. Although CM Arvind Kejriwal had to face a lot of obstacles, Kejriwal still implemented most of his main policies, which seem to have had a lasting impact in public services in Delhi.
Of course, his tenure was not incident-free. Kejriwal’s in-your-face brand of politics often pitted him against members of the opposition, central government functionaries, and bureaucrats. The several skirmishes at times eclipsed his successes, creating an unstable political climate. Furthermore, the govern his administration could not gain more control over Delhi further prevented Kejriwal from providing full effect to much of the reforms he had planned.
What’s Next for Arvind Kejriwal?
While Kejriwal’s resignation will certainly end an entire chapter in Delhi politics, it may not necessarily mean the last time he steps into the electoral scene. For now, Kejriwal remains one of the most potent voices in Indian politics; many would perhaps expect him to carry on and to propose ideals for his prime goals-anti-corruption measures and better public services. Perhaps this is the break for Kejriwal to invest more vigour into spreading the influence of his party outside of Delhi.
