
The Centre on Thursday launched a probe into allegations of an “unsafe and exploitative work environment” at audit and tax firm Ernst & Young after the death of one its employee.
We have initiated a comprehensive inquiry into allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment to ensure justice is served. We have formally taken up the complaint,” Shobha Krandlaje, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, tweeted on Thursday.
According to her mother writing to India head of EY, the accounting firm where the 26-year-old works, Anna Sebastian Perayil died due to “work pressure” at the firm.
On Thursday, her family said Anna had collapsed after reaching home from office on July 20 and was declared “dead on arrival” at the hospital.
“On July 20, Anna came back home from the office late in the evening and suddenly fainted. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead… Before that she had no health issues,”

Anita Augustine in a letter to Memani had pointed out the difficulties her daughter allegedly faced during her four month tenure at the firm and that she succumbed to “work pressure.”
Anita Augustine had also alleged that there was an exploitative work environment at EY.
Augustine said she was a fighter right since childhood till her academic years, where she excelled at everything she did. “She was a school topper, a college topper, excelled in extracurricular activities, and passed her CA exams with distinction.”
Anna worked tirelessly at EY, giving it her all to meet the demands placed on her. However, the workload, new environment, and long hours took a toll on her physically, emotionally, and mentally. She began experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress soon after joining,” Augustine said while pointing out that her daughter gave it her all at EY but was bogged down by the workload. But she forced herself, believing that hard work and perseverance were the keys to success.
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday said, “Whether it is a white-collar job or any other job, worker or employee at any level… if a citizen of the country dies, then we obviously feel sad about it. An investigation is underway in the matter and steps will be taken on the basis of the investigation.
