In a boost to the tech industry, global tech giants Google and Nvidia have announced deepening their engagement in India with a particular thrust on artificial intelligence. The announcements came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during a roundtable meeting held on Sunday at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel.
The meet was a part of Modi’s three-day sojourn in the United States where, through interaction with American CEOs of industries dealing with cutting-edge technologies ranging from AI and quantum computing to semiconductors, he met leaders from US-based companies. Pichai appreciated the vision Modi had for “Digital India” and the attention he had given to AI-related research areas of health, education, and agriculture. Huang opined that this focus would form an integral part of India’s journey towards “Digital India”.
Speaking after the meeting, Sundar Pichai said Modi was committed to harnessing AI for societal benefit in India. “The Prime Minister has been clear in his vision and saying, for instance that AI needs to be used to serve the people of India,” he said. “He is pushing us to think about how AI can be a tool to transform sectors like healthcare and education while making sure the necessary infrastructure is in place for this transition.” He said Google is “very committed” to increasing AI investments in India.
Pichai spoke at length about the continued “Make in India” and “Design in India” efforts and how the Prime Minister has repeatedly called out Google to work more toward local applications of AI. “We are looking forward to doing more in India, especially in response to the Prime Minister’s challenge to design AI solutions that address the country’s unique needs,” Pichai added.
Related to this, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang mentioned how India can be the forerunner in AI adoption, provided India capitalizes on its good pool of computer science talent and innovative startups. “India is home to some of the world’s brightest minds, and AI presents a tremendous opportunity for the country,” said Huang.
Added further detail were plans by Nvidia to increase its participation in India, but particularly in partnerships aimed at scaling up AI infrastructure. Through a recent partnership with Yotta Data Services, NVIDIA has already partnered with Yotta Data Services slated to increase GPU resources to 32,768 units by 2025 to meet the growing demand for AI workloads.
Huang added that Nvidia partners with Indian academic institutions and claimed each of the Indian Institute of Technology has an Nvidia AI Center of Excellence. “We are training professionals and students to embrace AI’s complexities. This is a pivotal moment for India to leverage AI in ways never imagined before,” he said.
Both the tech leaders acknowledged Modi’s deep interest in the transformative power of AI. Huang praised the prime minister for his inquisitiveness and for engaging more with AI, saying: “Every time I meet with him, he is eager to learn more about AI and its implications for India’s future.”
