The company, known for its commitment to pure-electric vehicles, has been steadily building its presence in India. BYD Plots Second SUV: What We Know So Far ?
BYD India has already confirmed that the company will showcase its fourth model at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. It is scheduled to start on January 17, 2025. The new SUV will cater to the growing demand for electric SUVs in the Indian market. More premium offering than the Atto 3.

In an exclusive interview, Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles at BYD India, said, “An SUV is definitely on the horizon. We’re looking to introduce the new SUV in a price range of Rs 20 to 50 lakh.”
Size and Battery Options: A Bigger, Better SUV?
One of the SUVs under consideration is the BYD Seal U, also known as the Song Plus EV in China. It’s expected to be significantly larger than the Atto 3. And could rival popular models like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson in size. The Seal U is equipped with BYD’s Blade battery technology, offering two battery options:
- 71.8 kWh
- 87 kWh, with a range of over 500 km (WLTP)
This SUV would deliver both a high range and premium features, making it suitable for customers seeking long-range EVs in India’s premium market segment.
BYD’s Focus on Pure-Electric Vehicles
Despite the rising interest in hybrid vehicles globally, BYD remains committed to its pure-electric strategy. Rajeev Chauhan highlighted that, while the company is keeping an eye on hybrid demand, it intends to focus exclusively on electric cars for the foreseeable future. This approach aligns with BYD’s global mission of reducing emissions and promoting a sustainable future.

“If hybrid cars start to build up a business case for us, we will be ready. But at the moment, we want to focus on our electric portfolio,” said Chauhan.

BYD is also gearing up for the launch of its eMax 7 MPV in India on October 8, 2024. The eMax 7 will replace the five-seat e6 MPV. It is expected to appeal to private buyers with a broader range of features. While including a sunroof and an enhanced interior.
