Israel’s spy agency Mossad planted explosives inside pagers imported by Hezbollah months before Tuesday’s detonations, Hezbollah has claimed.

Beirut: Fourteen people have died and more than 300 others wounded as walkie-talkies have blown up at Hezbollah strongholds across Lebanon. This comes a day after pagers exploded across the middle-eastern country, killing twelve people and injuring nearly 3,000 others.

How many walkie-talkies exploded is not clear, but hundreds were said to have done so. There have been reports of landline telephones also blowing up at several locations in eastern Lebanon.

The hand-held wireless radio devices or walkie-talkies were bought about five months ago, roughly the same amount of time as pagers, according to reports.

Today’s explosions happened in the South of Lebanon and in the Beirut suburbs. At least one of today’s explosions happened close to a Hezbollah-organized funeral for one of the victims of yesterdays pager explosions. There is a video from the scene which was widely spread via the popular social networks.

Israel advancing troops, United States calls for restraint
The Iran-backed Hezbollah said today it attacked Israeli artillery positions with rockets in the first strike at its arch-rival since pager blasts wounded thousands of its members in Lebanon and raised the prospect of a wider Middle East war.

Israel on Wednesday warned that Hezbollah’s escalation over the last 24 hours has “brought the war’s center of gravity north” and that it was “allocating forces, resources and energy for the northern arena.” The United States called for restraint by both sides to avoid any further escalation.

Israel’s Mossad allegedly planted explosives in Hezbollah’s pagers before recent detonations.

Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad confirmed this morning that twelve people were killed in the incident and approximately 2,800 were injured.

The blasts killed twelve people, injured about 2,800, with over 200 in critical condition. Injuries were primarily facial, hand, and stomach wounds. Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was also wounded.

Hezbollah had described the blasts as an “Israeli breach” on its communications network and vowed to avenge the attack. Hezbollah said it will continue to support Hamas in Gaza and that Israel should wait for a response for the “massacre.”

WHO MADE THESE DEVICES?
Preliminary information said that the pagers were produced in Taiwan, but the company has dismissed this. The Taiwanese pager manufacturer, Gold Apollo, however said that the devices were manufactured under a licence by a firm called BAC, that is located in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Although Israel has not responded to the blasts, it had said that it is widening the spectrum of its war with Hamas in Gaza to include its fight against its ally Hezbollah. Israel had made this statement hours before the blasts on Tuesday,

HEZBOLLAH RESPONSE
Terming it as a “massacre” and “criminal aggression”, Hezbollah said Israel is “fully responsible” for these attacks.

Hezbullah, Iran’s most powerful proxy in the Middle East, said in a statement it would continue to support Hamas in Gaza and Israel should await a response to the pager “massacre” which left fighters and others bloodied, hospitalised or dead.
