Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar and director Karan Johar were part of a directors roundtable where the latter said that male stars have to reassess their remuneration.

High remunerations of top male actors in the Hindi film industry have indeed been a concern of late. However, what is more relevant, as of now, are films bannered by megastars like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn with opening at an all-time low of ₹3 crore and ₹4 crore. The issue has been once more brought up by Karan Johar in the recently held roundtable of directors held by The Hollywood Reporter India, when he said that this is the right time for male stars to rethink their remunerations, before Zoya Akhtar continued. What Zoya said
“They are not going to know. But Karan, you have to just stop paying. You have to stop paying. That’s it,” Zoya said. To which, Karan responded that he’s stopped paying high fees to male stars now.
“What is your last couple of films? How much have you opened up to? With what right are you asking me for this number? I made a small film called Kill. I put the money in it because it was a high-concept film with a rank newcomer as the face of it. Because I’ve started doing it. It was a high-concept action film. You could not make Kill in any other way. I wanted to be in that train. Each star would ask for the same amount of money the budget was for. So, I was like, ‘How can I pay you? When the budget is ₹40 crore, you’re asking for ₹40 crore? Are you guaranteeing the film will do ₹120 crore? There’s no guarantee, right? So finally, I took a new boy, and he was an outsider,’ said Karan. Adding that there are only 6 male actors in terms of viability, and over 200 films to make in a year, so producers have to recut the pie to empower new, younger actors.”. Zoya added that technical crew must be given handsome money considering a male star is taking away 70% of the budget presently. Karan said few young male stars demand ₹40 crore but do not gamble in terms of their casting choices.

Kill
Kill opened in theaters in July. It was Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s directorial, and co-produced by Karan’s Dharma Productions and Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment. It starred Lakshya in his debut for Bollywood, Raghav Juyal, Tanya Maniktala, and Ashish Vidyarthi. The extreme action film was set on a moving train. The movie was first shown in the Toronto International Film Festival, and later it gained Lionsgate Pictures in North America distribution. Following that, John Wick director Chad Stahelski and Lionsgate announced that a Hollywood adaptation of Kill would be made. This movie grossed ₹24.2 crores at the box office of India.
